Shared custody and parental rights
Schoolysoft supports shared-custody situations and complex family configurations: separated parents, multiple legal guardians, or custody handled by a grandparent.
Add the guardians involved
- Students -> [Student name] -> Legal guardians.
- Click Add a guardian (or Link a guardian if the person is already registered) for each guardian to link.
- Set the relationship for each: Father, Mother, Legal guardian, Grandparent or Other. The “Grandparent” relationship covers, in particular, situations where custody is handled by grandparents.
Custody arrangement
Each link carries an independent custody arrangement: Full custody, Joint custody (the most common case in shared custody), Visiting rights or No rights. This arrangement is shown on each guardian’s record and in the table on the “Parents and guardians” page.
Configure rights per guardian
Each guardian can have different rights, enabled independently of one another:
| Right | Description |
|---|---|
| Authorised to pick up the student | Authorisation to collect the student |
| Can sign authorisations (outings, photos…) | Signing school-related authorisations |
| Access to grades and report cards | View assessments and report cards |
| Access to absences | View absence tracking |
| Billing contact (invoice payer) | Recipient of the student’s billing |
These five rights are the only configurable rights on the guardian ↔ student link: there is no separate right for the lesson log or for messaging with teachers.
To adjust a guardian’s rights: Parents and guardians — [Student name] page -> the relevant guardian’s row -> Edit link.
Billing contact
The Billing contact (invoice payer) right simply designates the person who receives the student’s billing. It is not an automatic notification mechanism: enabling this right for several guardians does not trigger an automatic send to both parents. Notification preferences, available in each parent’s profile, do not currently drive any actual e-mail sending — they lay the groundwork for upcoming automatic notifications.
Custody restriction
When a guardian is subject to a court restriction, it is shown read-only on their record in the Custody restriction field. Configuring rights (previous step) remains the concrete way to limit what that guardian can view or do in the application.
